A winter coat means different things to different people. If you live in Florida, or any other of the lower states, a winter coat may simply mean a light jacket. For others in the northern climates, a winter coat means something that will keep you warm when it’s 30 outside or even less. Here are a few tips on how to choose a winter coat that’ll be right for you.

The first thing you need to consider when choosing a winter coat, is what activities you’ll be doing while wearing it. Do you need a nice, much more formal long coat to wear when you are going to work or out on a date, or do you need something that you can wear while engaging in winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, or sledding? You certainly do not want to be wearing a nice wool coat if you are to be out thrashing in the snow. In addition, a puffy, down jacket would not look so hot over your evening dress.

If you could be out playing in the snow, you will want a coat that’s warm. The warmest type of winter coat is made of down. Look for a higher fill power, because this indicates a higher quality down, meaning it’s a warmer coat.

If you want a winter coat that is sleek and elegant, consider a wool coat. Wool coats will last for years, so they are a good addition to your wardrobe. They also will keep you warm, actually if they get wet, which is a nice point. In addition, wool coats are open in numerous sophisticated styles.

Another thing to consider is what length you’d like. Again, you don’t want a winter coat that hangs to your knees when you’re playing in the snow. However, a longer coat may be nice when you’re out running errands.

Quality is important in your winter coat selection. Make sure you look your chosen jacket over very carefully, looking at the seams, checking the pockets and the zippers especially. It’s extremely frustrating to finally choose a coat, get it home and have the zipper stick. The zipper area is very important because it gets a lot of use and so it must be very sturdy. If you have buttons, check them all make sure the threading is solid and none of the buttons are hanging off by only a thread for two. Button them all up make sure the buttonholes are large enough. You would not think this would be a problem, but it is occasionally.

While the good-quality coat is expensive, you can often find them on sale during certain times of the year. After Christmas, and in January and actually February’s a good time to look. Check out your larger department stores, because they often have a larger selection, especially towards the end of the season. Moreover, they often have the best sales.
